Virtual Classroom Software Support and FAQs
Device Setup
Flash® Player is a free browser plug-in and ActiveX® control created by Adobe® Systems, Inc., that works on various operating system platforms. It controls the camera and microphone settings in Jigsaw Meeting, providing the application with streaming audio and video capability, and animation in the 3D graphics.
Adobe® Flash® Player must be installed on your computer in order for Jigsaw Meeting to function properly. Ensure that your computer is running the latest version of Flash® Player; if it is not running a supported version of Flash® Player, then Jigsaw Meeting displays a warning message in your browser window when you attempt to join a meeting. Click the “get Flash” link provided in the message to proceed to the Adobe® download web site.
At the time of this writing, Jigsaw Meeting requires Adobe® Flash® Player 10 or later. For up-to-date versioning requirements, see the System Requirements FAQ.
NOTE: If you are using Microsoft® Internet Explorer® when you install Adobe® Flash® Player, the program entry listed in Control Panel is Adobe® Flash® Player 10 ActiveX® because Internet Explorer® uses ActiveX® controls. For other browsers like Mozilla® Firefox®, the Control Panel program entry appears as Adobe® Flash® Player 10 Plugin because other browsers use plug-ins.
To verify the version of Adobe® Flash® Player that is installed on your computer, navigate to this URL in your web browser: http://www.Adobe.com/software/flash/about/. To download and install Flash® Player, go to the Adobe® Flash® Player download page at http://get.Adobe.com/flashplayer/.Yes, in order to participate audibly in a meeting, (i.e., to speak to other attendees and hear audio during a meeting), attendees must use some sort of audio device. The meeting host decides whether a phone or Voice over IP (VoIP) device is used for the meeting.
In order to determine whether you need to use an external conference line (standard phone) or a computer-connected audio device (VoIP device) to participate, consult the email notification that you received from the meeting host.
More information
When the meeting host sets up the meeting, she selects whether audio will be transmitted by way of an external conference line, which uses a phone line that is external to the computer, or by using a computer-connected audio device, which uses VoIP technology. This configuration determines which type of audio device meeting attendees must use and is specified in the Jigsaw Meeting Invitation or Presenter Announcement that attendees and presenters receive in email.
If the email notification specifies a phone number, then attendees are required to use a phone in order to participate.
If the email notification does not include a phone number, then the meeting requires a computer-connected audio device (preferably a headset) in order to participate.
Using a phone
When the meeting host does not choose the Enable Audio option when setting up a meeting, it means that the meeting host has specified that an external conference line (i.e., a phone) will be used by all attendees in the meeting. In this case, attendees cannot use a computer-connected audio device in order to participate in a meeting.
NOTE: The Jigsaw Meeting Invitation or Presenter Announcement that attendees receive in email should specify the phone number required to dial in to the meeting. If this information is absent from the invitation, contact the meeting host.
Using a VoIP device
If the meeting host chooses the Enable Audio option when setting up a meeting (i.e., a phone number is not specified in the Jigsaw Meeting Invitation or Presenter Announcement), then all attendees are required to use a computer-connected audio device, also called a VoIP device. This setup requires that attendees have access to a microphone (for transmitting and recording voice) and headphones (for listening to audio).
Speaking and listening functionality are typically integrated into a single device called a headset. Alternatively, two separate devices can be used, such as a microphone that is built into a laptop computer and headphones that plug into an audio socket or USB port on the laptop.
IMPORTANT NOTE: It is recommended that attendees use a headset (or headphones) instead of PC speakers so that meeting audio does not reverberate into the microphone, causing sound distortion in the form of feedback and echoing. If only one attendee uses PC speakers during a meeting, audio is distorted for all attendees. For more information, see Why is there an echo when using VoIP in Jigsaw Meeting?Generally, there are three ways to listen to audio on a computer, depending upon the make and model of the computer. Many computers have built-in speakers commonly known as internal PC speakers that are integrated with the monitor or with the computer case itself. Other computers have separate speakers with connectors that plug into audio sockets (referred to as external PC speakers). Finally, most of today’s computers have audio sockets and a USB port for plugging in additional external audio devices (i.e., headsets and headphones).
It is not recommended that meeting attendees use internal or external PC speakers with Jigsaw Meeting because the sound can be picked up by any nearby microphone that is being used in the meeting. The resulting reverberation can cause audio interruption and distortion for all attendees in the meeting.
However, on the rare occasion that you are required to listen only when attending a meeting (i.e., not speak to other attendees), you can use PC speakers to listen to the meeting, provided all of the following conditions are satisfied:
• The meeting host has specified that audio will be transmitted by way of a computer-connected audio device, which uses VoIP technology, instead of an external conference line.
NOTE: If the Jigsaw Meeting Invitation or Presenter Announcement that attendees receive in email specifies a phone number to dial in to the meeting, then the meeting is configured to use and external conference line (i.e., a phone). Therefore, you cannot use PC speakers to listen to the meeting. You must dial in using a phone to listen to the meeting.
• A microphone is not connected to your computer.
• The speakers are not within audible proximity to any microphone that is enabled for the meeting. For best results, listen to the meeting in an enclosed area, such as a conference room, when using PC speakers for meeting audio.
IMPORTANT NOTE: It is recommended that attendees use headphones or a headset instead of PC speakers so that meeting audio does not reverberate into the microphone, causing sound distortion in the form of feedback and echoing. For more information, see Why is there an echo when using VoIP in Jigsaw Meeting?A camera is not required by attendees to join a meeting. However, Jigsaw Meeting presenters and attendees frequently use a computer-connected camera, (also known as a video capture device, imaging device, or webcam), to capture and record their own image while speaking during the meeting. This live video capture is transmitted to other attendees. Up to two meeting attendees can capture live video images during a meeting.
Attendees who do not plan to transmit live video images do not need a webcam in order to participate in a meeting.
NOTE: While participating in a Jigsaw Meeting, your video is not captured and displayed until you provide the permission to start video streaming from within Jigsaw Meeting. In other words, your video cannot be displayed without your knowledge.A computer-connected speaking device (also referred to as a microphone or recording device) is required for transmitting voice audio during meetings that use Voice over IP (VoIP) instead of an external conference line. It is recommended that you plug in and enable the microphone prior to joining the meeting.
If the meeting is set up to use an external conference line (i.e., a phone), then attendees do not need a computer-connected microphone.Headphones are a playback device. Headphones are made up of a set of audio speakers with either a USB connector that plugs into a USB port on the computer, or a Tip, Ring, Sleeve (TRS) connector. A TRS connector is more commonly known as an audio jack or headphone jack; it plugs into a computer audio socket. Note that the audio socket might potentially be integrated into an external computer speaker. Headphones are used for listening to streaming (live) audio or pre-recorded audio.
A microphone is a recording device that plugs into a USB port, a computer audio socket, or potentially an external computer speaker audio socket. It is used to transmit and record voice over a Voice over IP (VoIP) connection.
A headset is a single device that integrates both recording and playback. Essentially, it is a set of headphones combined with an attached microphone. A headset provides the same functionality as a telephone handset with hands-free operation. A headset plugs into a USB port, a computer audio socket, or potentially an external computer speaker audio socket.A Tip, Ring, Sleeve (TRS) connector is more commonly known as an audio jack or headphone jack. A TRS connector joins an audio cable to an audio device such as a stereo, TV, computer or, potentially, an external computer speaker. You plug a TRS connector into a round port called an audio socket.
On many computers, these sockets are color-coded pink for a microphone and green or blue for headphones, as in the example shown here. Note that the colors might vary, depending upon the computer manufacturer and model. A headset usually has two TRS connectors, one for the microphone, and another for the headphones.
Camera
When a Jigsaw Meeting presenter or attendee uses a computer-connected camera (also referred to as a webcam) to transmit streaming video from her computer, meeting attendees can view the video live in Jigsaw Meeting. Before joining a meeting, plug the camera into the appropriate port on the computer and ensure that it is configured properly to work with your operating system. If the camera has a USB connector, plug it into an available powered USB port.
Depending upon your computer’s operating system, you might receive a message indicating that the new hardware device is being installed. Follow the instructions provided on screen or with your operating system documentation to install and test the device if it has not been installed previously.
Or, if the webcam device has accompanying documentation and a setup CD-ROM disk, insert the disk and run the executable file that installs the appropriate device driver software. This software enables the operating system to recognize and use the webcam. Depending on the device, you might be required to run setup prior to plugging the device into the computer.
Ensure that your webcam is functioning prior to using Jigsaw Meeting.
For assistance with Microsoft® Windows® operating systems, consult the Microsoft support web site at http://support.microsoft.com.

For Linux systems, consult the appropriate Linux distributor’s web site or user forum, based on the Linux edition in use.
Microphone
When a Jigsaw Meeting presenter or attendee uses a computer-connected speaking device (also referred to as a microphone or recording device) to transmit voice from her computer, meeting attendees can hear the audio live in Jigsaw Meeting. Before joining a meeting, plug the microphone into the appropriate port on the computer and ensure that it is configured properly to work with your operating system.
If the microphone has a USB connector, plug it into an available powered USB port. If the microphone has a Tip, Ring, Sleeve (TRS) connector, (more commonly known as an audio jack or headphone jack), plug it into a computer or speaker audio socket that is designated for a microphone. Typically, these sockets are color-coded as pink for microphone.
Headphones or headset
If the meeting is not set up to use an external conference line, (meaning it has been configured to use a computer-connected audio device, which is a device that employs Voice over IP (VoIP) technology), then you must connect a listening device (i.e., headphones) to your computer in order to listen to the meeting. Your listening device might be a combination listening and recording device (i.e., a headset).
IMPORTANT NOTE: It is recommended that attendees use headphones or a headset instead of PC speakers so that meeting audio does not reverberate into the microphone, causing sound distortion in the form of feedback and echoing. For more information, see Why is there an echo when using VoIP in Jigsaw Meeting?
Before joining a meeting, plug the headphones or headset into the appropriate port(s) on the computer and ensure that it is configured properly to work with your operating system. If the device has a USB connector, plug it into an available powered USB port. If the device has one or more Tip, Ring, Sleeve (TRS) connectors, (more commonly known as audio jacks or headphone jacks), plug the connector(s) into computer or speaker audio sockets that are designated for a set of headphones or a headset. Typically, headphone sockets are color-coded green or blue for headphones, and pink for a microphone.
NOTE: Usually, when you connect headphones or a headset to the computer, the PC speakers are muted automatically.Your computer microphone is controlled by the Adobe® Flash® Player plug-in. It is recommended that you connect and properly install audio and video devices to the computer prior to joining a meeting. If the computer-connected camera (also commonly called a webcam) is accompanied by installation software, ensure that you install this software as directed by the device manufacturer. Then do the following:
1. Ensure that your computer camera is plugged in and properly configured to work with your operating system.
2. Ensure that the camera has been disabled in other desktop applications like instant messaging software (e.g., Skype®, Apple® iChat®, and others). For best results, close any other running application that might be using the camera.

Most Apple® Mac computers come with a built-in camera and microphone. If yours has a built-in microphone, it is the best device for you to use with audio applications like Jigsaw Meeting, so there is no need to purchase an additional microphone for Jigsaw Meeting.
It is recommended that you use the built-in microphone, along with a pair of headphones that plug directly into the dedicated headphones socket on the Mac.
NOTE: If you are new to using a microphone on a Mac, be aware that you cannot use an un- amplified microphone. On an Intel-based personal computer (PC), typically you can plug any microphone into the line-in socket. However, on a Mac, some form of power (amplification) is required for sound recording. Thus, if your Mac does not have a built-in microphone, you need to use a microphone (or microphone/headset combination) that has a USB connector instead of a TRS connector. Alternatively, use an amplified microphone.
1. In Mac OS® X, navigate to System Preferences.
2. Click the Sound icon. The Sound page is displayed.
3. Click the Input tab and select your microphone on the device list.
4. If your microphone is working properly, you should be able to speak into the microphone and see the volume level displayed in dark blue on the Input level bar. If you are in a noisy environment, select the Use ambient noise reduction checkbox.
5. Ensure that the Mute checkbox is not selected.
6. Click the Output tab and select your headphone or headset on the device list. Ensure that the output volume level is not on the lowest setting. Also ensure that the Mute checkbox is not selected.
